Activity/Interscholastic Participation

23.0 Activity/Interscholastic Participation

The Durango School District 9-R views Student Athletics and Activities as an extension of the classroom and an integral part of a student’s overall educational experience. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of clubs, organizations, and activities. Students selected for the privilege of membership in athletics and activities represent their school, and their behavior is expected to reflect positively on their school and community. Students, parents, coaches and sponsors are expected to live by and enforce the principles of the Athletic/Activities Code of Conduct (AACC) during AND out of season/activity, in or out of uniform, on or off school grounds, and at all school sponsored events, including travel. All students, parents, sponsors, and coaches should understand that the Athletic/Activities Code of Conduct is a special code with high standards applying to participants in 9-R athletics and activities, and that all student participants are also subject to the entire 9-R Code of Conduct and rules. The 9-R Code of Conduct applies before the Athletic/Activities Code.

23.1
Participation in school activities, including interscholastic competition, is a privilege extended at the discretion of the school and its officials and is not a right of the student. Participation is at the sole discretion of the appropriate school officials and in accordance with this code.

23.2
Eligibility for participation in school activities and inter- scholastic competition is governed by the rules of the Colorado High School Activities Association, the rules of the school district, the rules of the particular school, and the rules of the sponsors or coaches of the particular activity.

23.3
The provisions of this code found elsewhere relating to conduct do not necessarily apply to issues of eligibility; however, the rules of conduct elsewhere in this code may be made applicable to any sort of eligibility for school activities or interscholastic competition. See also the Durango High School handbook.

23.4
The standards for the development, implementation, and enforcement of eligibility rules must be based on the following factors:

23.4.1
Fundamental fairness, which means that there is a rational basis for the development, implementation, and enforcement of a given rule

23.4.2
The best interests of the students and school in general

23.4.3
The best interests of the individual student involved

23.5
Questions or bona fide objections to development, implementation, and enforcement of eligibility rules may be appealed to the principal of the school involved after review by the activities director. The principal’s decision may, at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools, be subject to review and final decision by the Superintendent.
