Water-Testing Results

Durango School District (DSD) is committed to creating a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. As part of this commitment, we have completed a two-year initiative to test and improve the quality of drinking and cooking water in our schools.

In spring 2023, the district joined the Test and Fix Water for Kids Program, led by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). This program, mandated by House Bill 22-1358, requires all schools serving Pre-K through 5th grade to test water fixtures for lead. While high schools were not included in the mandate, DSD voluntarily tested Durango High School at the district's own expense to go above and beyond state requirements.

What was done

  • Every drinking and cooking water fixture in our elementary and middle schools was tested. Durango High School was also tested, though not required by the state.

  • Fixtures with lead levels above 4.5 ppb were removed, replaced, filtered, or labeled for hand-washing only.

  • In total, 515 fixtures were tested, and 62 required remediation across the district.
