SOIL Outdoor Learning Lab
SOIL Outdoor Learning Lab is an outdoor learning lab rooted in community engagement, educational and economic opportunity, multigenerational collaboration, cultural and ecological stewardship, and healthy living practices. Based at Riverview Elementary School, SOIL will be a learning environment for all Durango School District students.
SOIL Community Garden will be developed in six phases:
PHASE 1 – Community and school garden:
Featuring educational plots and family or individual plots to rent.
PHASE 2 – Grow Dome:
Year-round growing; experimental and innovative horticulture methods; integrated aquaponic fish pond.
PHASE 3 – The Hub:
Amphitheater gathering and event space; solar pavilion and EV charging.
PHASE 4 – The Soil Shed:
Soil analysis lab & exploration; advanced composting systems.
PHASE 5 – Food Forest & Agriculture Lab:
Permaculture; regenerative agriculture practices; plants and fruit trees; animal husbandry; a farm market stand.
PHASE 6 – Education Center:
Commercial/demonstration kitchen; indoor growing area; classroom/workshop space; school and community programs & events.
