Sharing Student Photos, Videos, and Stories

We love celebrating our students’ achievements and sharing the great things happening in our schools. Throughout the year, we take photos and videos during classroom projects, events, and activities. These images may appear in school or district newsletters, websites, social media, or news stories.

Families have the right to opt out of having their child’s name or photo shared publicly, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Colorado law (C.R.S. 22-1-123).

If you choose to opt out, please know this means:

  • Your child will not appear in any school or district photos, videos, or media coverage.

  • Your child will not be featured or named for awards, classroom highlights, achievements, student spotlights, or student projects that are shared with other school families or the public.

  • In group photos or videos, staff and media will need to crop out, blur out, or exclude your child, which may make them feel left out during group recognition moments.

The opt-out does not apply to:

  • School yearbooks or other student-produced content

  • District or school events that are open to the public

  • Photos/videos of a crowd or background setting

This decision applies for the entire time your child attends Durango School District — preschool through 12th grade — unless you change your preference in writing.

How to opt out

If you’d like to opt out, please request a Media Opt-Out Form from your school’s front office staff. To opt back in, use the same form. If you do not submit a form, we will assume you give permission to include your child in public celebrations and communications.
