Requests for Exemption from State Assessments

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to ask that your child not participate in the annual state assessments. These tests are designed to provide important information about how well your child is doing in school and in meeting Colorado's learning expectations. Choosing for your child to not participate will limit the information available to identify his or her academic strengths and weaknesses.

Understanding Your Right and Key Considerations for Exemption

Parents and guardians have the right to exempt their child from participating in state assessments. Before making this decision, it's important to understand the implications of such a request:

  • Individual Student Information: If your child does not participate, you will not have access to annual reports on your child’s academic achievement and progress as measured by these state tests.

  • School Performance Metrics: Your child’s results will not be included in the metrics that the state uses to evaluate the performance of your child’s school.

How to Submit a Request for Exemption

If you wish to exempt your child from participating in the annual state assessments for the current school year, please follow these steps:

  • Review the Information Form: Review the information about state assessments (English | Spanish).

  • Complete the Request Form: Complete the official exemption request form (English | Spanish).

  • Return to Principal: Return the completed form directly to your child's building principal.

  • Scope of Exemption: You may choose to exempt your child from all state assessments, or you can select specific subject areas for exemption.

  • Validity: Please note that a request for exemption is only valid for the current school year. A new request must be submitted each year if you wish to continue the exemption.
