Crisis Prevention Institute

The Durango School District 9R has partnered with the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) which is a global training organization that specializes in providing behavior management and de-escalation strategies to help professionals safely manage and respond to crisis situations.

CPI's flagship program, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI), provides skills for managing disruptive, aggressive, or violent behavior in a safe, respectful, and effective manner.  NCI training emphasizes de-escalation techniques, safety, and respect for all individuals involved.

Here are some core aspects of CPI's training programs:

    • Techniques to help calm and redirect potentially disruptive behavior before it escalates
    • Emphasis on verbal and nonverbal techniques to prevent escalation
    • Focus on understanding body language, tone, and active listening.
    • Techniques to help individuals de-escalate their own behavior.
  • Risk Assessment:
    • Training participants to assess the risk level of a situation.
    • Recognizing signs of anxiety, defensiveness, and risk behaviors
    • Responding to behaviors in ways that defuse rather than escalate tension.
