8th Graders - SAVE THE DATE!

Durango High School welcomes you to an 8th grade parent night for students and their families to learn more about our school on Monday, January 28th from 5-7pm at DHS. Parents and prospective students will have the opportunity to explore the variety of elective options and core classes offered at DHS. Families will learn more about concurrent enrollment opportunities, AP courses, work experience, internships, clubs, activities, athletics, and student support programs.

Escalante Forestry and Fire Ecology Study

This year, Escalante’s GT Coordinator and Ag teacher, Lu Boren, combined 7th and 8th exploratory classes to tackle some close-to-home real issues that the community of Durango struggled with this summer and in summer’s past - forest ecology and the effects of fire suppression on current forest health.

DHS Awards $33,000 to Students who Passed AP Exams

Durango High School students lined up this week to receive checks for passing their Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Through a Legacy Grant from the Colorado Education Initiative students received between $100 (passing 1 exam) up to $500 (passing 5 exams). In total the school distributed $33,000 in checks to students.

Update for Kids' Camp Families

The following in a non-emergency message from Durango School District 9-R for all families in Kids’ Camp at Needham, Riverview and Park Elementary schools. These after-school programs were re-located to other sites in the community due to Police direction after an unidentified threat came in. All children are safe and we ask that families pick up their students from Kids’ Camp at their normal pick-up times at the following alternative locations:

Park Kids’ Camp - Sacred Heart Church at 254 East 5th Avenue
Riverview Kids’ Camp - River Church at 860 Plymouth Drive
Needham Kis’ Camp - Miller Middle School at 2608 Junction Street

Police are still investigating the situation, but all schools have been cleared of any threats. Please check our website at durangoschools.org or call our information line at 970-375-3811 for updates.

EMS Greenhouse Class Grows Food for School Cafeteria

At Escalante Middle School, students aren’t just learning how to grow, preserve, and prepare their own food, they’re getting a taste of a very important sector of the Colorado economy. According to the Colorado Department of Agriculture, our state agriculture industry generates a whopping $40 billion in economic activity each year. It also provides more than 170,000 jobs in the state, enough to employ the entire population of Fort Collins.

In Lu Boren’s Greenhouse class students are actually growing lettuce right in the classroom. Using a hydroponic system, students are able grow luscious heads of lettuce from tiny seedlings throughout the school year. The lettuce is then harvested and served up in the salad bar of the school cafeteria. The lettuce sales to the cafeteria then help fund the greenhouse program.
