In-Person Instruction Suspension Extended

Included in this message, you will see that a decision was made by the Governor to close schools to in-person instruction for the remainder of the year. While I am saddened that conditions will not allow us to welcome our children back into schools safely this year, it does allow us to continue to focus on the quality of our home-based program and ensure that we are reaching all of our children.

Updated 2020/21 Academic Calendar

In response to multiple surveys and feedback received on the Academic Calendar, the Board of Education approved a change brought forward by the superintendent supported by a majority of the feedback of our community and staff who engaged in multiple opportunities for dialogue.  These changes are meant to support our teachers with much-needed planning time to recognize their hard work in constantly working to improve student outcomes.

Temporary Grading Options

Durango School District 9-R is making a temporary modification to the grading policy at the middle and high school levels for the fourth grading period/second semester of this school year due to COVID-19. We are changing the grading system to a scale of P (reflects a grade of C or higher), P- (reflects a grade of D), or NC (no credit). Students and families who wish to receive traditional letter grades may request to do so. The rest of this letter highlights the specific shifts in the system and actions a family will take to receive traditional letter grades.

Update on Remote Learning for Special Education Families

We want to communicate with you about your child’s special education services during changes in school closures and distance learning situations. During this unexpected and unprecedented time, our partnership between home and school becomes increasingly crucial when it comes to our children. 9-R Rolls Out Remote Meal Services to Support Families

The school district will provide access to breakfast and lunch in take-home packages at central pickup sites for all families in Durango as a continued support for families during school closures. This food option begins on Wednesday, March 25, 2020. These sites include remote bus stops as well as in-town locations and pick up will be on a daily basis. Any child from age 0-18 years will be eligible to pick up breakfast and lunch at these established locations at designated times for pick up. The child must be present to pick up a meal.

Academic Calendar Survey

As you know, our district continues to remain focused on improving student outcomes and providing our amazing educators time to plan for high quality instructional programs. Through extensive conversations around building a 2021-22 academic calendar, some feedback has led our board and me to discuss possible changes to the 2020-21 calendar.
