What was discussed and reviewed

  • Unified Improvement Plan: Reviewed the Unified Improvement Plan for Florida Mesa Elementary School, which is on track with planned interventions to address the school's goals.
  • Superintendent Update: Heard updates from Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser regarding transition plans for Sunnyside Elementary School, new transportation relationships with out-of-district schools, equitable academic placement requirements for students transitioning from 8th grade to high school, athletics protocols, and national spotlights on Durango School District.
  • COO Update: Received a briefing from Chief Operations Officer Chris Coleman on upcoming easement agreements for the Three Springs Elementary School development and the Board's preference for managing bond change orders within agreed-upon bid packages moving forward.
  • Committee Reports: Listened to monthly updates from board members on their respective committee work.
  • Legislative Update: Received a legislative report from Director Erika Brown.
  • Governance Protocols: Received clarification on governance protocols from Directors Morledge and Parmenter following their attendance at a governance conference in Denver.
  • DAAC Review: Evaluated the District Accountability Advisory Committee (DAAC) bylaws and annual charges against statutory requirements.
  • Policy Edits: Considered proposed edits to Policy BC-04 regarding Board roles for potential adoption at a future meeting.

Actions taken by the Board

  • Executive Session: Prepared for the routine annual performance review of the Superintendent during executive session.

Community engagement

  • Broadcast Showcase: Enjoyed a presentation from Miller Middle School's Broadcast Program students, who shared a professionally produced school news video featuring anchors, interviews, and varied news coverage.
  • Aviation and PSAT Excellence: Highlighted Durango High School's Aviation Program and recognized students who achieved perfect scores on the math section of the PSAT. Grayson Farnsworth, DHS senior, shared his journey with DSD. There is much to be proud of with CTE programming and our students' success.
