What was discussed and reviewed

  • Special Education: Received a comprehensive update regarding Special Education programming, processes and goals.

  • Urban Renewal: Heard a presentation from the City of Durango Urban Renewal Authority regarding Tax Increment Financing agreements for the proposed Durango Crossings project.

  • Operational Reports: Reviewed annual monitoring reports for Operational Expectation 1, Global Expectations; Operational Expectation 9, Organizational Culture and Learning Environment; and Operational Expectation 10, Instructional Program.

  • School Funding: Discussed and edited a resolution supporting Initiative 195, Protect Colorado's Future, which aims to provide increased funding for public schools.

  • Long-Range Planning: Debated the Long-Range Planning Committee's proposed guidelines for school consolidation and determined a formal presentation is required before adoption.

  • After-Action Review: Discussed a proposed After-Action Review process designed to evaluate the outcomes of specific events and decisions.

  • Committee Updates: Shared reports from all committees.

  • Future Planning: Reviewed the proposed Board workplan and suggested meeting dates for the 2026-27 school year.

Actions taken by the Board

  • Consolidation Timeline: Agreed to vote on the district's recommendation to consolidate Sunnyside Elementary School no later than the September 2026 Regular Board Meeting.

  • Enrollment Strategy: Committed to developing a comprehensive, districtwide process alongside the consolidation vote to address declining enrollment across all schools.

  • Regular Board Meeting: Scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, at 5:30 p.m. at the Impact Career Innovation Center (2410 Main Ave., on the Durango High School campus).
