EMS students build playhouses for skills, credit, and elementary joy

In Bryan Bagdol’s Level 1 Construction Skills class, students are building “Wendy” model playhouses from the ground up — measuring, sawing, hammering, and problem-solving their way through five full-scale structures in the spring sunshine. It’s hands-on learning at its best, with students working side by side, learning real skills, and bringing their projects to life.

And here’s what makes this truly trailblazing: These students aren’t just building playhouses — they’re building their future. The class earns them credit toward construction classes at Durango High School, giving them a head start before they even step onto campus as freshmen. That means more opportunity, more confidence, and more momentum from day one.

Even better? The finished playhouses will head to DSD elementary schools — a full-circle moment of middle school students creating something meaningful for younger learners in their own school community.
