Durango School District schools earn state recognition for student growth

This award is given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic growth over time. Specifically, it recognizes schools that show strong student progress on state assessments, including the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), while serving diverse student populations. It is one of the highest honors a school can receive from the state and reflects consistent, schoolwide efforts to support every learner.

Both Fort Lewis Mesa and Needham Elementary have received this recognition multiple times over the past five years, underscoring a sustained commitment to continuous improvement and student success.

At Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary, Principal Jenny Imel credits a strong focus on relationships and intentional planning.

“We ground ourselves in the belief that we are humans first, prioritizing relationships and respect in everything we do. We are committed to ensuring that every student has access to the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed academically and personally. By working in close partnership with families, we create a strong, collaborative community focused on student growth. Through a focused and ongoing work plan, we intentionally target what students need most, continuously refining our approach over time to drive meaningful and lasting progress.”

At Needham Elementary, Principal Riley Alderton emphasized a shared commitment among staff to both high expectations and individualized support.

“Over the past three years, Needham staff have worked to align to a common vision of individualized support for every student’s growth while ensuring we maintain our focus on high expectations oriented toward high achievement. We believe in excellence in action every day and are collaborating and planning intentionally to make sure that students receive our very best so that they can be their very best.”

These recognitions reflect the work happening in classrooms every day—where strong instruction, data-informed practices, and meaningful relationships come together to support student growth.

As Durango School District continues to focus on academic excellence and whole-child development, honors like the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award highlight what’s possible when schools stay grounded in purpose, partnership, and high expectations for every student.
