District and school leaders gathered on March 3 to unveil the finished plan, celebrate the collaborative work behind it, and take the first steps toward implementation. Leaders spent the day deepening their understanding of the vision, clarifying ownership of each strategic focus area, and building trust across teams to ensure strong execution.
“This strategic plan represents one of the most comprehensive community engagement efforts in our district’s history,” Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser shared in her letter introducing the plan to staff, families, and the broader community. “This isn’t just a district document. It’s your vision, shaped by your voices, reflecting your values.”
The plan builds on Durango’s strong foundation and aligns directly with the district’s Portrait of a Graduate. It is organized around three interconnected priorities:
- First, ensuring every student excels academically and personally — balancing rigorous academic achievement with social-emotional growth, creativity, and critical thinking.
- Second, connecting learning to real-world careers and passions — expanding career-connected learning and strengthening partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
- Third, strengthening the organizational foundation that supports it all — advocating for competitive compensation, enhancing systems and supports, and building the infrastructure needed to sustain excellence across every school and program.
The district partnered with Alex Carter of the Colorado Education Initiative to help guide development and implementation of the plan. His work with Durango School District was supported through the Empowering Action for School Improvement (EASI) grant from the Colorado Department of Education — a competitive, multi-year funding opportunity aimed at improving school performance and strengthening district systems.
Carter noted that what sets Durango apart is its commitment to implementation. “It’s rare for districts to bring all their leaders together to align around a strategic plan,” he said. “Many districts write a plan and put it on a shelf. When leaders leave energized, clear about their roles, and trusting one another, that’s when a plan truly comes to life.”
“This strategic plan represents our shared commitment to ensuring that every student who walks through our doors — regardless of zip code, background, or circumstance — has access to extraordinary opportunities and the support to seize them,” Dr. Cheser wrote.
The district will share regular updates, track progress transparently, and continue creating opportunities for listening and learning as the plan evolves.
As we look ahead to 2030, the message is clear: Let’s go from great to world-class.
