This case continues to be painful for the children harmed, their families, and our entire school community. Our hearts remain with the victims, and we hope for their continued healing and recovery.
This has also been incredibly difficult for students, staff, and families, who were shocked by the crimes that later came to light. We understand that coverage of this case may be upsetting or triggering for students, and school counselors are available to support any student who needs it.
Durango School District follows required and robust hiring practices and conducts all required state and federal background checks for employees. Even so, this case is a sobering reminder that safeguarding children requires constant vigilance from all adults.
We urge any student, staff member, or community member to report concerning behavior immediately to law enforcement or through Safe2Tell, Colorado’s anonymous reporting system. Speaking up can prevent harm and help keep children safe.
We also encourage families to continue conversations with their children about online safety and trusted adults, and to review the guidance shared by the Durango Police Department.

- Safe2Tell Colorado is for students who need to report threats to themselves or others – in a way that keeps them safe.
- Safe2Tell Colorado is anonymous. This means your identity is unknown. Anonymity is protected by Colorado state law.
- The toll-free number is: (877) 542-7233 (SAFE). Save the number as a contact in your phone if you ever need it.
- Anonymous web reports can be made by clicking the “Submit a Tip” Button.
Reports also may be made using the anonymous Safe2Tell Colorado mobile app available on the Apple Store and Google Play. Safe2Tell is for serious reports only. It is not for pranks or hang-up calls. False reports and blatant misuse of the Safe2Tell resource will be investigated.
