Stewart has served on the Board since November 2021, when she was appointed to fill a vacancy for District D, which includes much of central and downtown Durango, including The Grid and the South Side. Over the past four years, she has contributed to district initiatives supporting student success, governance, and community engagement.
In addition to her Board service, Stewart was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives for House District 59 in November 2024 and began her term in January 2025.
Stewart released this public statement:
After careful consideration, I am submitting my resignation from the Durango School District Board of Education, effective December 31, 2025.
It has been an honor to serve this community for the past four-plus years, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and work alongside so many dedicated educators, families, students, and community partners. I'm indebted to my fellow board members, Dr. Karen Cheser, and the executive team for the grace they have given and the growth they have fostered.
During my time on the board, I have been continually inspired by the passion and professionalism of those who support our students every day. I am proud of the strides we have made together to close opportunity gaps, expand access to essential supports, and strengthen the foundations that allow all students to thrive. These collective achievements reflect the hard work of our administration, teachers, staff, and community members, and I am grateful to have played a role in that progress.
Although it is not easy to step away, I do so knowing that the district is moving forward with purpose, vision, and strong leadership. I remain committed to the success of all students in Durango and across Colorado and I will continue to support public education through my work at the State Capitol.
Thank you for the trust you placed in me and for the countless lessons I have learned through this service. It has been a privilege.
“The Board is grateful for Katie’s four years of service to Durango School District,” said DSD Board President Kristin Smith. “We appreciate her leadership and wish her well as she continues to serve our region in the Colorado House of Representatives. We will ensure a transparent process as we invite District D residents to apply for this important community role."
During the board meeting after Stewart’s announcement, Smith added: "We’re really going to miss you. We’re so proud of the work you’re doing at the state level. You’re very determined and persistent because you lead with your heart.”
Under state law (C.R.S. 22-31-129) and Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) guidance, mid-term vacancies are filled by appointment when the resignation occurs outside the regular election cycle. The Board will formally declare the vacancy by resolution at its next meeting, which then begins the 60-day period for the Board to appoint a qualified District D resident.
The Board will outline the full timeline and process for community participation at its January work session, which will be held Jan. 13, 5:30 p.m. at Riverview Elementary School. That information will be shared broadly to ensure transparency and encourage interested District D residents to apply.
