Dear Durango School District Teachers and Staff,
As we stand together at the threshold of another school year, I am filled with immense gratitude for each of you and profound excitement for the journey ahead. This year, we embrace the theme "Anchored in Purpose, Driven by Hope" – words that capture not just our aspirations, but our unwavering commitment to the students and families we serve.
I won't sugarcoat the reality we face. Yes, there are storms swirling around us. Funding reductions challenge our resources. Declining enrollment shifts our landscape. Political divisiveness creates turbulence in our communities. These are real challenges, and acknowledging them honestly is the first step in navigating through them with strength and wisdom.
But here's what I know with absolute certainty: we are not ships adrift in these storms. We are anchored in purpose – deeply, firmly rooted in something far greater than any challenge we face. Our purpose is clear and unwavering: to help every single student discover and live out their Ikigai – that beautiful Japanese concept of finding one's reason for being, where passion meets mission, where what you love intersects with what the world needs.
Every day, you are the architects of possibility. Through our Portrait of a Graduate competencies, you are ensuring that our students don't just survive the future – they shape it. You are equipping them with the critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills that will serve them in careers we can't even imagine yet. You are nurturing their character, their resilience, their capacity for joy and wonder.
This is why we are driven by hope. Not the passive kind that simply wishes for better days, but the active, determined hope that rolls up its sleeves and gets to work. The hope that sees potential where others see problems. The hope that believes in our students even when they don't yet believe in themselves.
Your expertise, your heart, your daily dedication – these are our greatest assets. And I want you to know that your voice matters tremendously in shaping our district's future. I encourage you to lend your insights and ideas through our Budget Committee as we navigate financial decisions with wisdom and creativity. Join our Strategic Plan Steering Committee to help chart our course forward. Participate in our Teacher and ESP Advisory Councils where your frontline experiences inform our policies and practices. Become a PoG Rockstar and help us elevate the incredible work happening in our classrooms every day.
Together, we are more than the sum of our challenges. We are educators, mentors, champions, and changemakers. We are anchored in a purpose that transforms lives and driven by a hope that lights the way forward.
The students walking through our doors need us – not just our knowledge and skills, but our belief in their limitless potential. They need us to be steady when the world feels unsteady, to be hopeful when hope feels scarce, and to be the consistent, caring adults who see their brilliance even on their cloudiest days.
