School meals are free — here’s what you still need to know

All meals will remain free for all students through December 2025. However, participation in the Healthy School Meals for All program exceeded expectations, and Colorado is unable to continue funding the program without an increase in taxpayer contributions. A ballot measure will be introduced in November 2025 to continue funding for the Healthy School Meals for All program.

Two adults serve bagged lunches and breakfasts to two students. As part of its 2025 Summer Food Service Program, the district is offering free summer meals to all children Mondays through Fridays, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Sack lunches and breakfasts for the next day are served on the playground on the east side of Needham Elementary School (2425 W. Third Ave.).

It’s still important for households to provide income information when requested. Gathering this information allows Durango School District to receive state and federal funding. These funds go directly to schools to help cover the cost of meals and support after-school activities and other nutritional programs for students. Plus, qualifying households may be eligible to receive Summer EBT benefits, discounted school fees, class materials, bus passes, utilities support, and more.

Apply now

Families are asked to complete a Free & Reduced Price Meal application, even though meals are free. These forms help the district qualify for additional funding, and your student may also qualify for fee waivers or other support. The fastest and easiest way to apply is through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Paper forms are available, but must be the current year’s 2025–26 combo form. Old versions cannot be accepted. Important: If your household receives SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, or other qualifying benefits, you may be directly certified for free meals — no application needed. We’ll send notices to directly certified families this month. If you receive that letter, you’re all set!

Don’t stress over summer forms

Your student’s current meal eligibility continues through Oct. 1, so while we encourage families to apply now, there’s no need to rush. We recommend applying before school starts to avoid delays in support services, but you don’t need to reapply during summer break unless your household information has changed.

Why this matters

While meals are free, submitting the form helps bring more resources to our schools, supports student fee waivers, and ensures our district remains eligible for critical programs. Thank you for supporting our schools and choosing healthy school meals!
