Guttormson moved to Durango with her family in late 2023, seeking “a new adventure in the mountains.” Since then, she has served as a school psychologist at several Durango School District schools, including Riverview and Animas Valley elementary schools, Miller Middle School, and Durango High School. Before moving to Colorado, she was a special education administrator in a large suburban district in Minneapolis for nearly six years.
“I am very excited and honored to be the next principal at Florida Mesa Elementary School,” said Guttormson. “I have a passion for mental health, early literacy, and making connections with my colleagues, students, and families.”
She succeeds longtime principal Shannon Morris, whose decade of leadership has made a lasting impact on the Florida Mesa community.
“We recognize that Shannon leaves behind big shoes to fill,” said FMES Assistant Principal Jim Dusman. “She has been a remarkable leader and an incredible mentor. Andrea is aware of the legacy of excellence that Shannon has established, and she is committed to honoring that legacy while also bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to our school.”
Guttormson’s vision is to create “a collaborative learning environment that allows students to creatively take on big projects using communication, technology, and teamwork.” She’s especially excited to help lead the future transition of Florida Mesa Elementary to a new campus in Three Springs, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2028. “I want the new school to be the product of a shared vision of the community – a place that feels relevant and innovative to both challenge and support all learners,” she said.
The Guttormson family now lives within the Florida Mesa attendance area. Andrea’s two children are thrilled to be joining the school next year alongside their mom. When they’re not at school, the family enjoys skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and exploring Southwest Colorado.
“I’ve been so grateful for the openness and kindness of the Durango community,” said Guttormson. “We’re happy to call it home.”
