Schools and Green Teams gear up for Earth Day Durango, April 22

The community-wide Earth Day Durango event will be held on Saturday, April 22. Students from some of the Green Teams will participate in the Earth Day Parade, starting at 10 a.m. at College and Main and proceeding to Buckley Park. Starting at 11 a.m. at the park, our district and Durango High School will have two booths with fun, hands-on activities. At the park, vote for your favorite art projects featuring work from our students.

More Earth Day events through the month of April include: 

April 1 – 22: Earth Month Bingo. Take 5 Actions Toward Sustainability in April for a chance to win up to $500 in prizes. 

April 19: Trash Pickup Event hosted by Durango High School’s Green Team. 5-6:30pm | Free | Info: [email protected]

April 20: Electronic Recycling Event at La Plata County Fairgrounds 8-5:30pm.

April  22: Sage and Zia Restaurants present Earth Day Durango 2023

Parade: Meet at the  Main Ave Train Station at 10am in Durango. This year the parade theme is The Procession of the Species. The public is invited to dress up as their favorite tree, animal, fungi and more and then walk or bike to Buckley Park for the official Earth Day celebration.

Celebration: Buckley Park, Durango 11-3pm: This is a free event open to the public to experience sustainable business and social justice booths, music, Ballet Folklorico dancers, The Secret Circus Society, food, sustainability workshops, fun for kids, a “trash-to-treasure” art and maker space, face painting, and more.

April 25, 2 p.m.: Durango 9-R Goes Dark: We ask that everyone turn off all of the lamps, lights, computers, coffee pots and other switchable items so we can measure the amount of electricity we use.

April 24 and 25: Food Waste Awareness: Green Team Leaders will be working with the building Techs to help set up school cafeterias to separate and measure the different items generated, and wasted, in the lunch rooms. 

April 24 – 28: Household battery collection: Durango 9-R schools will collect all used household batteries and recycle them appropriately.

April 24 – 28: Bike to School Week for all in-town 9-R school students and staff.

Ema Munoz Ropotica, Escalante Middle School 7th-grader with winning  Green Team Shopper-Bag Art ContestEma Munoz Ropotica, a 7th-grader at Escalante Middle School, kicked off the month of Earth Day celebrations on April 7 by winning the Escalante Green Team Shopper-Bag Art Contest.
