Safety and Wellness Reminders for Parents from 9-R - December 2021

Parents are key players in creating safer schools and communities. Safe2Tell Colorado provides the only anonymous way for students, parents and community members to report unsafe and risky behaviors before they grow out of control. Each year, Safe2Tell Colorado receives thousands of reports on bullying, suicide threats, mental health concerns, child abuse, substance abuse, violence, planned school attacks, and other concerning behaviors. Each concern reported to Safe2Tell Colorado allows for caring, concerned adults to effectively intervene in the life of a child or youth who is struggling. Parents are encouraged to talk to their child about this resource and to utilize the resource themselves if they have concerns they would like to report anonymously. Safe2Tell is available 24/7, you can download the App in your App Store or you can call in a report anytime at 877-542-7233.

We have also seen an uptick in our secondary schools of students misusing online resources, including social media. Included with this letter is a handout from NetSmartz and DFI Now, which talk about ways to help protect your child online, as well as ways to stay involved in their online life. Some of the tips provided in this handout support your home conversations with your child to protect them online.

We also know that sometimes the holidays cause stress and some students or families may be struggling with mental health or with substance abuse. There are grief counseling services available at your child’s school; if you need to access those resources, please contact your child’s school counselor. There are resources available in our community to support you and your children during this time. Here are some:

  • Crossroads: 970-403-0180
  • Axis Health: 970-259-2161
  • Boys & Girls Town National Hotline: 800-448-3000
  • Safe2Tell: 866-542-SAFE
  • Grief Center                                                              970-764-7142

Thanks again for all you do to support the safety of your child, both at home, in school and online. We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday break.
