On January 26th the Board of Education unanimously approved the Durango 9-R Board of Education Resolution on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the first major step their effort to address inequities throughout the district and fulfill the mission of “guaranteeing equitable educational opportunities for each and every student. The resolution was created with significant input from a diverse array of stakeholders.

The Board values our public schools as places of belonging and understand it is a requirement for effective learning. Any one person not feeling valued, safe, and welcome in our schools is simply too many.

Like most other school districts across the country, we have significant opportunity gaps across various subpopulations and past efforts haven’t done enough. The current pandemic-induced disruption to our schools is only exacerbating the problem.

In order to successfully fulfill our mission of equitable opportunities for each and every student, the board believes we must step back and assess our entire organization through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion and be willing to take actions that will ensure meaningful, intentional, equitable and enduring systemic change. The next step is to create the equity advisory committee. If you have ideas about how to best structure the committee or have an interest in serving, please email schoolboard@durangoschools.org.
