Public Budget Meeting

The State has received additional monies from the federal government and we are awaiting information on what kind of relief that may provide.   While the district had already begun some reduction in staff due to salary advancements planned for next year and declining enrollment across our District, given current projections we have continued to look at further staff reductions.  Over 85% of our budget is currently spent on salary and benefits, so it is difficult to achieve significant reductions without a cut to positions.

Currently, our central office has reduced 16 positions with a cut of approximately $1.35 million in spending.  The district is currently in a hiring freeze until we can determine our final budget target for next year.  


On Wednesday, May 27, we will host a community review of our budget and the cuts achieved to date.  At this session, we will seek input from our community on further cuts we may need to pursue to balance our budget for the 2020-21 school year.  Currently, our zoom license will allow up to 300 participants.  Should we exceed this capacity, we will record our session and post it for viewing by other members of our community.  The link will be posted on the district website the day before to prevent “Zoom Bombing” which has become prevalent in meetings posted publicly in advance.  Please know we will use appropriate safeguards during this meeting to prevent such activities.  We will use the polling feature to gather participant feedback during the meeting.  

This week we’ve surveyed our staff to get their thoughts on potential reductions with our focus remaining on keeping cuts away from classrooms as much as possible.  After this session, we will begin building a final budget based on the determination of funding from the legislature and the feedback we receive from our staff and our community.  The legislature is not set to reconvene until sometime between May 25th and June 1st. 

Our commitment to the community remains as always to focus on student achievement with the resources we are allocated.
