Board of Education Election Cancelled Due to Lack of Candidates

Both current directors for those seats – Kristen Smith representing District B, and Katie Stewart representing District D – have filed to run again.  No other candidates have submitted the necessary paperwork by the filing deadline of September 1, 2023, at 4 p.m.

According to Colorado State law, potential candidates are required to file a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors from throughout the school district by that deadline. State law at Colo. Rev. Stat. § 1-5-208(1.5) authorizes the Board of Education by resolution to cancel the election and declare the candidates elected if at the close of business on September 5, 2023 there are not more candidates than offices to be filled at the election, including candidates filing affidavits of intent to be write-in candidates.

With no other candidates, the Board of Education voted to cancel the election, and appoint the two candidates to the upcoming terms during a Special Meeting on September 5, 2023.

Durango School District pays a fee to place an election on the ballot. The cost to the district for the previous election, in 2021, was $26,000, which will be saved this election cycle.

The next school board election is scheduled for In November of 2025, Districts A, C, and E will be up for election.
