4th grade students from Fort Lewis Mesa and Park Elementary Schools scored well above the state average in math. Fort Lewis Mesa scored 21% above the state average, while Park Elementary scored 19% above the state average.

School Board president, Kristen Smith, gave ”Huge accolades to Juniper School and Park Elementary School for going above the state average in all three grade levels tested in ELA, and Park for going above state average in all three grade levels in math. It speaks to the teamwork and commitment of these schools as a whole.”

Based on spring 2023 PSAT/SAT results, Durango School District’s 9th-, 10th-, and 11th-grade student's Mean Scores were above state and national Total Mean Scores, Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) Mean Scores, and Math Mean Scores.

“We are very proud of the work our students and teachers have done, and we are committed to the ongoing support and professional development of our teachers, to ensure success for all students, at all schools” said Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser.

Schools are in their first or second year of adopting and implementing new curricular resources for K-8 English Language Arts and Math, which can make testing a greater challenge for students. Teachers are already seeing the improvements in students this year because they are now familiar with the curriculum.

We will continue to support all schools to deliver standards aligned, engaging learning opportunities, so that students are equipped with the necessary skills to launch successfully from our system” said Dr. Laurie Rossback, Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA). “We continue to be thoughtful about how we provide differentiated supports for all students as we continue to transition out of the impacts of COVID-19.”
