Durango School District 9-R Student Nutrition program is working hard to create a healthier school nutrition environment for your children. We promote healthy eating by offering organic grass finished beef, organic apple products, whole grain foods, a variety of vegetables each week, salad bar, beans, no fried foods, fresh fruit selections everyday and of course, local sustainable foods whenever possible.
Addressing nutrition related problems has become a school district's responsibility. As the district teaches and models healthier behaviors, it is most effective when those values are reiterated at home as well. Together we can establish healthy eating habits early in life to dramatically reduce health risks for our children in the future.
We want to share our plan for Meals in the Classroom (MIC) in our elementary and middle schools. Our goal for MIC is to ensure equity in education through access to healthy school meals with a reasonable level of safety for students and staff. In order to achieve our goal we have made the following plans in conjunction with our district administration and local health authorities effective 8/31/2020.
Location and Schedule of Meals:
Breakfast meals in our elementary and middle schools will be served as grab and go. These meals will be eaten in the classroom. Hot lunches will be prepared and packaged for ease of transport to classroom or outdoor areas. Elementary and middle school students will have their lunch order taken by their teacher. Elementary students will have meals delivered to the classroom. Middle school students will come to the cafeteria to pick up their meal and take it to the classroom or other designated eating area. Meal times will be according to master schedules at each building site.

Time to Eat:
In order for students to be well-nourished and ready to learn, they must have enough time to enjoy MIC. The minimum amount of time for MIC once students receive their meal is: Breakfast 20 minutes; Lunch 20 minutes. Most schools have 40 minute meal blocks to allow time for hand washing and clean up.
Based on current guidance we cannot allow meal time guests until further notice.
Thank you for supporting our School Nutrition Program – we are dedicated to serving your students the safest, tastiest and most nutritious meals possible. This school year is a new situation for all of us. Changes to our meal service may happen with little warning, but we will do our best to keep families informed about changes in a timely manner.
