Four schools receive awards from Colorado Department of Education

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) awards were announced at the end of May. Principals received banners and certificates during the 2025 Opening Day celebration for Durango School District staff at Durango High School on Aug. 13.

Park Elementary School, Animas Valley Elementary School, Needham Elementary School, and Fort Lewis Elementary School all received the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award, a prestigious honor from the Colorado Department of Education. These awards are given to schools that show exceptional growth in student learning over time across all grade levels and subject areas.

In addition, Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary was also recognized with the John Irwin Award, which is reserved for schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time, exceeding expectations in English Language Arts, math, and science.

“These awards remind us what’s possible when educators, families, and communities work together to create meaningful opportunities for every learner,” said Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova. “It’s always inspiring to see schools leading the way with innovative approaches and a deep commitment to their students.”

The awards are based on the state’s School Performance Framework, which evaluates schools on a number of indicators, including how much academic progress students make from year to year. The schools being honored this year “exceed” expectations in this area, showcasing the impact of dedicated staff, strong instruction, and supportive school communities. Durango School District is proud of the hardworking teams at these schools and the students who have risen to meet new challenges.

Our team puts students first and always strives for each human in our school to be their best selves.”
