Recap: May 20 Board of Education Regular Session

Here’s a brief summary of the meeting:

What we learned

  • Dr. Laurie Rossback and Sean Hembree presented the district’s MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) data.

    • Students in grades K–5 showed gains in reading and math due to targeted interventions.

    • SEL (Social Emotional Learning) scores improved across all five measured competencies.

Public comment highlights

  • Eight individuals advocated for pay increases for teachers and support staff due to Durango’s high cost of living.

  • Annabelle Parker thanked the board for being awarded the 2025 DEF Elizabeth Testa Scholarship.

 

Community engagement

  • Student board members presented their final project and were recognized for their service this school year.

  • The board introduced student members selected for the 2025–26 school year.

  • Past DEF scholarship recipients spoke, and Annabelle Parker was formally recognized.

Board actions

  • Approved April/May meeting minutes and the HR consent agenda.

  • Approved edits to Board Policy OE-04.

  • Found the superintendent compliant with Policy OE-13.

  • Approved a Resolution to request Land Dedication Fees from La Plata County.

Discussion topics

  • In Executive Session, the board received an update on contract negotiations with DEA and DESPA. Mediation will begin in June.

  • Reviewed upcoming end-of-year events and graduation plans.
