District pilots composting program in school kitchens

Matt Poling, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, says “We project that over the course of the next school year, we will have diverted enough to fill a typical 6-yard dumpster.”

Everyone from kitchen staff, custodial teams, and student Green Team members are contributing to this cause. Currently, staff take the scraps to feed to their livestock.

Poling says “Composting has been on the forefront of our Green Team initiatives for some time now. We knew that pre-consumer waste was an easy start, and that it was happening at a few schools. When we reached out to kitchen staff about this opportunity, we found that it was already happening at most of our schools.”

Poling says that they will experiment with post-consumer collection at a few select school locations when classes resume in the fall.
