Feeding Your Reading

And

 Igniting Your Writing

Summer 2007

The third annual, Feeding Your Reading and Igniting Your Writing class will be provided for students who will be enrolled in fifth or sixth grade classrooms next fall.  The class is free and provided by School District 9-R and the Fort Lewis College Teacher Education Department. Feeding Your Reading and Igniting Your Writing will be held at on the Fort Lewis College Campus in the Education Business Building, room 219, Monday-Thursday, from 1:00 -3:30pm, June 11-July 5. The class is especially designed for children who are interested in learning to love to read. The 9-R Summer School starts a few days before the Reading and Writing Course is over. If your child is attending the 9-R Summer School, they are allowed to miss the 9-R Summer School for the days that the two programs overlap in order to finish the Feeding Your Reading Program.

A Fort Lewis College Teacher Education professor will guide the course, along with licensed teachers from the region, and students who are studying teaching at Fort Lewis College.

Classes are offered for pupils who are going into fifth or sixth grade next fall. Enrollment is limited to the first 45 students who register. Participants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Should you wish to enroll your child in the class, please fill out and return the registration form in this packet. If you would like more information about the class please call Gene Taylor at 970 247-7274 or email taylor_g@fortlewis.edu.

The large purpose of this class is to explore the beauty, mystery, and utility of the printed word with the help of art, music, conversations, and writing. Each novel will be read in small groups. We will take time throughout the reading to discuss our understanding of the novel and its importance in our lives.

We will read printed novels while listening to the audio versions. This activity gives pupils practice in following the printed line and making the return sweep to the next line. Listening to the audio version of the book while reading the printed copy, allows students to read through a page of print quickly and easily.

Reading, if it's worthwhile, should lead to action and expression. Each class will produce a book with a collection of their art and written interpretations of the novel. Each pupil will receive a copy of the book at the end of our course.

On the last day of our class we will demonstrate our understanding of the novels by displaying our artwork, our poetry, and our written interpretations of the novel. We will inform parents of the time and location of our display.
