How
old does my child have to be to start school?
To enter kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by Oct. 1. Durango School
District 9-R also offers preschool at its elementary schools. Students who
will enroll in the preschool program for 3-year-olds must be 3 years of age
by Oct. 1. Students who will enroll in the preschool program for 4-year-olds
must be 4 years of age by Oct. 1.
Enrollment
in district preschool programs is limited. Contact Preschool

for information about the district’s preschool
programs, including Head Start, the Colorado Preschool
Program, and tuition-based programs.
Where
will my child attend school?
Where you live in the district determines
where your child attends school. See the district’s
current Attendance
Boundary Maps for enrollment areas.
Can
I enroll my child at a school different from the
one in our attendance area?
For the most part, yes. However, the district
is examining its current open enrollment regulations, and
that may change for next fall. Parents or guardians interested
in enrolling a student in a school outside their attendance
areas must submit an open-enrollment request to the
desired school's office or the district's Student Achievement
office by June 1 of the year you intend to enroll. Open
enrollment confirmation will occur after registration in
August. The application must include the signature of the
principal of the attendance area school if the student
lives within the Durango School District 9-R attendance
boundaries.
