Math
scores show signs of improvement
The
percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced on the
2007 CSAP math test increased slightly over the previous year.
Four out of eight grades remained stable, three improved,
and only one great showed a decline. The percentage of students
scoring unsatisfactory dropped slightly from 11.4 percent in
2006 to 10.8 percent in 2007, not a significant difference.
Similarly, the percentage of students scoring advanced increased
from 24.5 percent in 2006 to 25.9 percent in 2007.
The
district adopted a new K-12 math curriculum in 2005-06 that
more closely aligns with the state standards. Each grade level
integrates concepts of numberic literacy, algebra, geometry,
and statistics. The mutli-disciplinary approach has shown increased
student achievement in math in ninth and 10th grades. At Durango
High School, students are no longer enrolled in remedial math
classes. Rather, students who have trouble grasping the mathematical
concepts in their regular math classes receive extra tutoring
and are enrolled in a math support class concurrently with
the regular class.
In
its accreditation contract with the Colorado Department of
Education, the district must meet a performance target of 80
percent proficient and advanced. The district also has set
reasonable progress goals.See links above.
