from Durango School District 9-R
Release Date: November 1, 2007
The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education on Tuesday voted to accept Animas High School’s withdrawal of its charter application for a 440-student school with the district. It also will forward staff review of the charter application to the Colorado Charter School Institute and a summary report prepared by FLC President Emeritus and former 9-R board member Joel Jones, who volunteered on the board’s behalf to oversee and summarize public review of the district charter application.
Charter school proponents had filed applications with both the district and the Colorado Charter School Institute, which has the authority to grant charters independently of local school districts.
The Colorado Charter School Institute approved the Animas High School charter on Oct. 18. The 9-R Board of Education had set Dec. 11 as the date for its decision on the district application. With the steering committee’s decision to withdraw the district charter and the board’s decision to accept the withdrawal, the charter school is free to begin planning for its proposed opening in Fall 2008. The charter institute now will assume all oversight of the charter school, including accountability under No Child Left Behind and any financial liability the school may incur if it isn’t successful.
