high school, and instead, will work on a contract with

Board accepts charter school’s
withdrawal of district application, forwards district
comments to CSI The Durango
School District 9-R Board of Education on Tuesday voted
to accept Animas High School’s withdrawal of
its charter application for a 440-student school with the
district. It also will forward staff review of the charter
application to the Colorado Charter School Institute and
a summary report prepared by FLC President Emeritus and
former 9-R board member Joel Jones, who was hired to oversee
and summarize public review of the district charter application.

State
chartering authority approves AHS charter, district
offers congratulations to steering committee
Durango School
District 9-R Superintendent Mary Barter on Thursday offered
the district’s congratulations
to the Animas High School steering committee upon the Colorado
Charter School Institute’s approval today of the
school’s charter.
“The
steering committee deserves kudos for presenting an in-depth,
quality application that gave the Charter
School Institute board of directors the confidence to approve
the school’s charter. They have provided a compelling
vision for an alternative educational program for our community.
We wish them the best of luck in turning their vision into

High School steering committee responds to CSI concerns
Following
are the AHS steering committee's responses to concerns
raised by the Colorado Charter School Institute during
its review of the Animas High School charter application:
Board
sets public meeting schedule for AHS charter application
with 9-R
The
Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will host
two public meetings on Wednesday, Oct. 24, to hear public
comment about the application for a district charter
for a proposed 400- to 450-student high school. The meetings
will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at
the Community Recreation Center.
Charter School Institute reviews of Animas High School
application mixed Review
of Animas High School's application for a charter with
the Colorado
Charter School Institute were mixed,
with one reviewer praising the school's application and
another calling the application "not yet complete." A
small group of parents have submitted applications to
both the state chartering authority and the 9-R Board
of Education to establish a charter high school of 444
students. The state chartering authority is expected
to rule on the application on Oct. 18; the district has
asked for a deadline extension to Dec. 11. Read the Charter

District Review Process
The
Board of Education accepted the application for review at
its Sept. 11 meeting. In addition, the district appointed
Fort
Lewis College President Emeritus Joel M. Jones to to
oversee the analysis and review of the Animas Charter
High School applications on the district’s behalf.
The
review will be conducted in three phases:
- Research
and data collection, formal review by district
staff, District Accountability Advisory Committee,
and the
Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee.
